(First and foremost, it’s modern UI !)
So I have a request from a client that they want ALL files to be opened in their users’ respective client applications when possible (so word, excel, onenote, etc). This is just an easy setting in the site collection features page and it works for files in libraries etc.
Now, they also want the left side navigation link “Notebook” to open OneNote in the users’ client application. The problem is, the left side navigation always seems to open in the browser. Usually I’d recommend the user to click “edit in client” on the onenote webpage and then their client application will open, but this is not good enough for the customer.
The customer wants it so that their users just click on the left side navigation “Notebook” and their client application opens automatically.
Right now my solution has been to write a small redirect page, to add “onenote:” before the target URL, so that it will open in the client application. But this doesn’t work. It gives the following error:
We couldn't open that location. It might not exist or you might not have permission to open it.
I do have permissions, because when I go to the library where the default onenote is and I open it, it opens in my client application (because of the activated site feature) and I can access it.
Of course, sales has already sold the “solution” so I kind of have to make it work now…
Here’s my question: how can I open the “Notebook” in left side navigation automatically in the user’s client application? Can I make it work with my “onenote:” redirect fix and if so, how (because now I get that error)? Is there any other fix?
